Day 9
3 girls and 4 suitcases
Last night at half 11, I had a message from Andrew saying
that he was sitting in Emergency at Mount Sinai Hospital downtown-yikes. The
fact that I was still up was a miracle because only one other night has seen me
past 10-10.30 pm bedtime since we arrived.
After ascertaining that he was on his own and that his rugby
coach had told him to get himself to the hospital to get checked over, I jumped
in a cab just before midnight and went to keep him company. I left the girls a
note, in case they awoke but managed to sneak in and out without them ever
knowing that I was gone.
Docs checked him out and ruled out viral meningitis (a worry
because one of his team-mates has it and isn’t in great shape) and he was sent
home with lots of verbal info’ on when to def’ go back, if he got worse. The
giggle of the event was the senior Dr bouncing in with the junior one and
declaring that he looked too well to have viral meningitis and that his
bloodwork was all good…….to which the other doc informed him that there hadn’t
been any bloodwork done-lol. The embarrassing silence that followed was interrupted
by him then declaring that Andrew looked
too good to have anything more than a viral infection and that the viral
infection may indeed be the same virus as his friends but that it was unlikely
that he would end up with meningitis. Ah, the joys of the health service, the
world over.
After a big healing hug (for each other) And’ and I got cabs
in the opposite direction from each other and I got to bed around 2am. I’m so
glad that I was able to be there to support him. Even big boys need their
mummas sometimes-right. Andrew's still not feeling great so please send some love and healing his way-ta.
Today has been very hot, hot, hot. Like Flippin’ Florida in
July. And tonight we have had a thunderstorm with very big lightning strikes
and tons of rain. I was glad to be indoors ironing some of the un-ironed stuff
I brought with me. The wee hoose doesn’t have an iron………..yet.
We went up to 921 this morning and dropped off some luggage
and wandered round for the first time on our own. The new keys for the back
door didn’t work and Jen and I must have looked like robbers as we stood there
trying the 4 keys that we had been given and then trying them again…….and
again. Eventually I went round the front and tried them in the door. First one
fitted-presto. We’ll get other ones over the weekend but for now we have 2 for
the front door which is plenty.
After our 4+hrs in Ikea yesterday we thought all we had to
do today was to nip back and order beds. Luckily I Iooked online before we went
because I discovered that the mattresses we were going to buy were not in
stock. We could buy them online but they would take several days to arrive. The
next closest Ikea is 1.5 hrs away by TTC and they had everything we needed so
just as I was saying goodbye to Bill, he gives me the news that he’d found us
better beds at the same price as the ikea ones. Mmmm? Wot to do? Ikea vs Sears?
After too-ing and fro-ing about which idea was better I eventually pressed the
buy button for the Sears ones. They’re not as pretty but they come ready
assembled and are worth twice as much as we’re paying for them so hopefully
they’ll provide many a good nights sleep when they arrive………….next Friday. We’re
on the floor till then, folks but have been lucky enough to be borrowing
sleeping bags and air mattresses till then. Now, I don’t want to wish my life
away but…….roll on next Friday (and the Friday after that ‘cause Bill arrives)
Funniest story today had to be when Jen and I went into the
Rogers cable shop to talk to them about getting wifi. I had spent a couple of
hours this morning trying to compare prices from different companies and had
been moaning to Bill about the fact I had no clue about what any of it meant. I
had been doing a live chat with a girl from Bell Canada and accidentally pressed
the x instead of the-
Oops-no more Gloria.
Anyway, We went into the Rogers shop which is just on the
corner of our new street and were greeted by a smiley guy who asked if he could
help us. I told him that we’d just arrived in Canada and needed wifi but needed
someone to go through all the possibilities with us. He said that he’d just get
us ‘logged in’ and asked my first name and then he asked Jen hers. And then he
turned his ipad back to front and made some ‘curious’ noises. (I thought his
ipad was malfunctioning) Then he said and I quote ‘Do you have a Billy in your
family?’ Eh? Wot? Yes, but how did you know that? I was thinking that there was
some rugby connection but I hadn’t even given our surnames. The guy proceeded
to say that he had a message to pass on from Billy and that it was that
everything was sorted, so we didn’t need to chat to anyone. Again, eh? Wot? I
asked if there was a hidden camera somewhere but the gyst of it was that Bill
had done live chat with someone who gave him all the info he felt he needed and
he’d set up cable/wifi instillation for Tues morning……………now we just need to
get a TV……..and a phone………and a mobile………and!
So, Been up since 6.25 and after my drama in the middle of
the night, I’m wilting a wee bit. Ali had a good day apart from lunch when the ‘mean
girls’ continued to be ‘mean’ but she’s made a lovely friend and they went
shopping after school till 8.45. Her friend called us at 7.30 to say that they
were just heading back (they were in downtown Toronto) and Ali called me from a
payphone to say she had a 20 min wait for her last connection.
All in all a grand day. 4+hrs on skype with Bill in the
room-fab. Cases pretty much packed to go tomorrow and I am now remembering that
I didn’t do meditation this morning so I’m off to do it now.
Love you all,
Lxxx
