Day 7
3 Girls and 4 Suitcases
Hi everyone, it’s been a very long day today, a day that has
been a wee bit bizarre in that I spent 7 hours making masks for the Toronto International
Film Festival. I’m not allowed to give you any details about what they look like,
till Sunday ‘cause they are a surprise for the folk receiving them on Saturday
but I can tell you that they were a flat sheet which had loads of fold tabs and
poke-out holes which you then had to put the flaps into and build up the mask
so it fitted around a face. My poor fingers, especially my thumbs are feeling
very overworked and the bending-over, sitting on the floor was not good for
Jens and my backs. We will recover but for tonight, we are tired. Been up since
6am to get across the city for 9am and got home at 6.15.
If anyone has seen the film Elf, imagine the scene where he’s
making the etch-a-sketches and has made far less than the real elves. You got
that? Well we had an ‘Elf’ on our production-line (which wasn’t really a line ‘cause
we were all sitting around a room, some on floor, some on chairs, no tables)
and I’m pretty sure that she pulled our average hourly masks made number down
massively. 18 mins into the afternoon she was made a comment about being still
on her first mask and it was only half done. My recorded time for making one
(on Jen’s ipod) was 3.5 minutes so I had probably made 4 to her half one-ugh.
And boy, could she talk for Canada. Luckily she moved across the room from me
after lunch. The 3 hours till lunch were a wee bit of a challenge to my
tolerance and I would have been pulling my hair out after another 4 of her jabbering.
Poor soul was lovely, tho’ and was being very helpful with advice to another
girl but boy, I wish her hands and fingers had been working as fast as her
tongue.
I met a couple of Female rugby players and 2 male players
from Andrews rugby club. It was one of the Toronto Scottish boys who gave us
the work. I will have to feed back to him that I think he’s breached the
working health and safety reg’s-lol. The afternoon was full of lots of chat and
went quickly after the getting-to-know-the-room, of the morning.
After initially being told that we would not be paid for
lunch half hour, we were then given an hours paid lunch plus the girl in charge
let us away 20 mins early because of ‘the smell in the room’ !? Once outside I
had to clarify with Jen that she had actually said that and that I hadn’t been
aware of us being smelly, even though it was incredibly hot at times. Laughing,
she told me that she had been referring to the smell of the paper from the
masks that she was very aware of when she came up to the room. Perhaps she was
worried that we were being poisoned?
So, back in hotel room and had my feet up since return. Had
a packet of crisps for dinner-girls weren’t hungry and I thought I’d wait to
see if hunger appeared. An hour after the crisps, Jen was suddenly hungry…….and
I wasn’t. She’s had pasta and I’ve still not had anything else. I think a
banana may be in order……..or some chocolate? Found some cheap dark choc’ that
is 70% and I’m hopeful that it will be like the Aldi stuff I was having at
home.
What else. Did I say that there are 3 holistic places within
5 mins walk from my new hoose? I will have to go investigate soon……and hour of
Reiki $80-eek. I’ll be charging less than that, me thinks but perhaps I could
just be employed by one of the places and they can get $80 and I’ll get my $50?
Watch this space. Need to get the wee hoose sorted first.
OOO, a new page-a first.
Tomorrow I have to get utilities set up for new home and
also register for OHIP (Ontario health insurance plan) Getting keys for place
in the evening and Vera has offered to pick us and some luggage up from here to
go up to the house to sign lease. Or she’ll pick us up in Ikea. Will ponder
that but think the luggage will be good and Jen and I can do Ikea on Fri.
People are being really helpful and a friend of Andrews,
from Scotlands girlfriends parents (did you get that) have offered to pick up
furniture or anything else that needs moved to house. I will call them and see
if they can manage beds and mattresses else I will get Ikea to deliver them,
hopefully on Sat. Thinking now that I may want to go to Ikea tomorrow to get
beds delivered Fri. We are in these beds till Sat am so getting the beds built
up on Fri/Sat would be a good idea.
Okay folks, I am going to sign off now. Sending lots of love
out to you all and I am going to get Ali to post those photos of the new home.
Oh, yeh, Alison had her first full day of school and she
actually enjoyed the classes and found someone nice to talk to in each class.
Her lunchtime was a wee bit awkward with a group of girls and boys that one of
them had invited her to join but hopefully she will settle into some lovely
friendships. Send her some positive vibes folks.
Lxxxx
