Day 95......first haircuts were like a spa day.
3 Girls and 4 Suitcases.
Now, I'm not sure what it's like, when you go to the hairdressing schools anywhere else in the world but in the Aveda hairdressing school, on King Street East in Toronto, it's like a spa day. Alison and I had a lovely time during our back to back appointments with our eighteen year old hairdresser Mathura. Her name sounds like a futuristic planet, from a scifi movie but she's definitely a beautiful human soul who is kind and caring and who loves learning to be a hairdresser. She chose to learn at the private (twice the cost) Aveda school because of it's Brand and I know that she has a very bright future ahead of her. We shall miss her when she qualifies next summer and moves to B.C to study aesthetics for a year. But we will enjoy her pampering whilst we can and perhaps she'll be able to recommend another student to replace herself.
I often thought about going to the old Nautical College, in Edinburgh to get my hair done. Even when it was called the nautical college I think that they had hairdressing students-right? I was never brave enough or perhaps it was a 'time' thing when I was in Edinburgh. Mathura had told us that the appointments would be two hours each because of her 'educator' needing to check things but I was done in approx' one hour twenty which isn't much longer than a cut/blow dry in Edinburgh. Alison got her hair curled and so took the full two hours but that was okay because I went across the street, into a beautiful old church and did my meditation. For a huge old place, it was remarkably warm and I had to remove my coat. Granted, it was mild yesterday but taking your coat off on a Sunday morning, in my old church in Edinburgh, would have been unthinkable. The organist was practicing, when I first went in and I was very moved by the music and a few tears leaked out. I love churches and I love the music from the organs and the singing of hymns. It all penetrates deep down into my soul and touches a part of it that lies dormant most of the time.......but not yesterday.
The choir moved in for practice, after I had been there for nearly an hour (I had a nice long meditation yesterday) and I moved from the main church into a little military chapel. I sat there for a few minutes, just so I could hear them sing and then was able to sneak out, in the middle of their practice, without seeming rude.
I would have stayed longer but I wanted to finish writing the blog for Day 93 on my phone and it didn't seem right to me, to type on my phone whilst in the church. So, I sat on a bench outside and outside seemed much colder because the church had been so cosy. Ithink I perhaps didn't add much to the blog because I was concentrating too much on wishing I was warmer.
Alison had her hair done first and we swapped robes and I took her place in the chair whilst she nipped along to starbucks for a hot chocolate. She had planned to stay along there and do some revision but it was busy so she came back (after drinking her hot chocolate on the same bench as I sat on, outside the church) and revised on the seats behind me.
When I was done, Mathura took us back to see all the products that she had used....the sales pitch bit. She's a wee mouse, though and no real selling was done but I had already decided that, if the haircuts were as cheap as I thought they were going to be (they included a lovely head massage at the start) that I was going to treat myself to the shampoo that she had used on me.
And I did.......in a very large size that she said would last a year. Now, I only wash my hair twice a week so that likely equates to two, for me. But Ali and Jen may also use it, when they waant a bit more volume in their hair. It was a 20% off day and because I spent a total of more than $75 I get $25 off my next haircolour at the end of Feb. So, whilst Bill falls off his chair, when he sees the bill from Aveda..........I have actually saved us money-honest.
It was a long day out from 10.20 till 6.20 and then I went straight down to the grocery store. I thought they closed at eight but just after I got in there, they announced that they were closing in fifteen minutes........WHAT! I think that I may have written a blog about this happening already? Mmm? So I ought to have remembered that it's a 7pm close on a Sunday-right?
I ran around picking up my 'usuals' and managed to get out of the store at two minutes to closing. Alison was surprised to see me back so quickly and the baking potatoes were still in the microwave stage of cooking. A half hour later we sat down to a very late dinner and both very much enjoyed those baked potatoes.....simple but yummy.
And the evening saw me up late because I had some writing to do and then I discovered that I had a new episode of once upon a time to view. It had been two weeks since m last 'fix' and so I sat up and watched whist me third load of laundry was washing. When I got to bed at around half midnight, I wasn't really sleepy. I almost got back up again, when I saw the clock hit one thirty but persevered, observing my thoughts and eventually, I must have dozed off. My dreams are bonkers and very real and I wake up frequently, analyze them in my head, smile and go back to sleep. I was complaining to my friend Chrissie that the dreamcatcher she had given me wasn't working but, on reading an article on dreamcatchers yesterday, it's working perfectly well because I am not having bad dreams and that's what dreamcatchers prevent.
One of these nights I will remember to take a notepad and pen upstairs with me, to jot down the dreams.
Righty ho and off I go. Does anyone else think that December seems to have come around awfully quickly? Happy December folks.
Much Love,
Lxx
