Day 34.....and we have phones!
3 Girls and 4 Suitcases.
Yes, the big news from yesterday is that we finally got a couple of phones........and it wasn't as painful as it may have been. Oh no, this is going to be money-related again but I just have to quickly say that the price of mobile contracts here, is not funny. We have spent more than a month trying to get our heads around the prices and plans and after a good experience, chatting to both a lovely young guy called Dylan on Monday and another lovely, very knowledgable guy called Dan yesterday, we decided to go with their company, Fido (which is just the cheaper brand of the company who we have our cable/internet with)
We got a pretty decent deal on a Galaxy 4s for Ali. we were supposed to pay $100 for the phone, over and above the plan but he knocked that off and we got 10% discount on my plan because I had my own Blackberry (thanks Ger) and we got another 10% off Ali's plan because it was a second line. It's still way more expensive than the £10/mo I was paying but so much better than the $100 plus dollars we thought we'd be paying. Dan even said that if Jen wants the same phone as Ali, he'll give her one free if she pops in today for it..........she's pondering as $40/mo is $40/mo, right........but she does like the phone, as do I. There's a wee green monster in me that wishes that one of them wanted my Blackberry so that I could have the big pretty screen that Ali has but I know the Blackberry and it'll more than suffice.
The bonus is that the shop is right next door to our cable shop on our corner and it'll be great to be able to just pop in there if any of us are having problems with our phones.
I have the sum total of 4 contacts so please feel free to email me so that I can save you to my phone and it you have a contract that allows you free international (national in Canada) texts, please send me your number so that we can connect.
It was amazingly easy to be phoneless for the last month. There was a kind of freedom that went with it. We left a note for each other if we were going to be out when someone else was going to arrive home and otherwise just trusted that we were all okay. I've never been a big fan of having to have my kids keep me up to date with their wherabouts by text because it can lead to all sorts of problems, if they didn't contact you when they said they would. If they were going to be out later than I was going to be staying up, I'd let them know that I was going to bed and most of the time I'd get a reply but if I didn't, I didn't and it was a good sign that they were likely enjoying themselves.........or their phone had died.
I know that I am very lucky to have kids who I trust to be responsible. Thanks guys.
There isn't an awful lot else to report about yesterday. I did my bank business without any problem.....so friendly and helpful in the banks.......oops, money-related again-lol.
Jen, Bill and I went for a wee wander in the afternoon but as we reached approx half hr south, the weather was getting a bit dodgy, near the lakeshore and so we headed home again. The rain, up here didn't arrive but there was a bit of a drop in temp. By this weekend, the temp is supposed to become more autumnal, which is a shame but having it still in 20's for Oct 1st is pretty incredible. I do believe that Edinburgh is having similar lovely weather which is great for all of you back home.
No sign of the sun this morning. Ali has not long left for school and I think that she may just need the hoodie she wore. She's been taking a sweater every day because she feels the a/c in the school makes it chilly. She's settled in great, from the way she talks about classes, teachers and classmates. Lunchtimes seem to have sorted themselves out and the scores she's getting on tests are good. She finds the science hard but because she's doing okay with everything else, I'm hoping that she'll decide to stick in with the science studying but hey, it's Ali.
Jen only has another week till she heads off to Vancouver and she's looking forward to it. It's a shame that we didn't think about her going in Jan, instead because she could easily have picked up some seasonal work in the near future which would have been great but we didn't and she won't....C'est la vie.
Work-wise for me? I'm looking but every time I meditate, it just says 'write' and so when Jen and Bill disappear, I am going to be spending a lot of time on this laptop and I hope that by the time Jen returns I will have completed my book or screenplay or both. If you discover me posting loads on FB-remind me that I'm suposed to be writing, will you.
So, not quite 9am and this is done-obviously a good time for me to blog. I am planning to keep going daily with this but once the 'serious' writing begins, who knows.
For now, I'll say ta ta and send you all much love.
Lxxxx
